For new logo design companies and free lance logo designers building a portfolio is a critical aspect of their brand development. Many logo design companies and artists fill their portfolio by creating dummy designs and displaying them on their portfolio.
However, clients have become smarter now days. They do use Google to check that a company with the name on the logo in your portfolio really exists or not. If they do exist then they check to see if they are using the logo you have on your portfolio. When they find out that your custom logo design portfolion contains dummy samples, they start thinking that may be you are not that professional.
So what is the genuine way to build a good portfolio. The easiest and quickest way to build a genuine portfolio is by taking part in graphic design,or custom logo design contests. Such contests are quite common and in fact there are websites dedicated to it where people can post contests for designers to take part in. Prize amounts are minimal but you get the exposure and it looks really nice when you have some volunteer work in your portfolio.
For example it will look much better if you have a logo for special children's special needs organization on your portfolio with a link to there website where people can go and see your design applied on their website. On the other hand creating a dummy logo for a non-existent business is quite lame.
